MATCH PREVIEW | Rhinos Reserves open title defence against Wakefield
Reigning Reserves Champions Leeds Rhinos begin their title defence in 2026 this Saturday afternoon as Chev Walker's side take on Wakefield Trinity in their season opener at Stanningley, kick off 1pm.
2025 was a standout year for the club's youth ranks as the Men's and Women's Academies and Men's Scholarship all enjoyed strong seasons, but the Reserves was the jewel in the crown as they lifted the club's first Reserves Grand Final trophy since the competition returned in 2022.
Made up of rising Academy talents, such as George Brown and Presley Cassell who have since gone on to make their Super League debuts, and squad members from Brad Arthur's first team, the Rhinos won 11 out of 12 matches during the regular season before defeating Warrington in the competition's finale at AMT Headingley. A low-scoring 8-0 saw George Brown score the game's sole try, whilst Jack Smith added two conversions to lift the trophy for the home side.
2026 provides a new challenge for Walker's side, starting this weekend against Wakefield before the side travels to Wigan in a week to take on the Warriors, who just missed out on a Grand Final appearance at the end of last season.
2022 Reserves Grand Finalists Wakefield Trinity enjoyed their best season in three years in 2025 as they won six games on their way to a fifth-place finish.
Having finished ninth and eleventh after finishing in the top two in 2022, the club picked up wins against Castleford, Leigh, Hull KR, Salford, Huddersfield and Hull FC over the course of last season but couldn't close the gap to Hull and Wigan to put themselves in with a chance of reaching the Grand Final. 2026 offers a chance to bounce back and Trinity have a favourable start as they take on Leigh and London after this weekend's opener.
